Housing Twitter is united in its hatred of the American suburb. There are real reasons, however, that it is the plurality of the world’s preferred living environment. There are real benefits to reduced density on child educational outcomes and adult happiness. In terms of producing good individual outcomes, American suburbs are actually good. Still, we used to make better suburbs. The American suburbs built in the 1920s and before are some of the nicest neighborhoods in the world. At a time when American cities are increasingly dysfunctional, we need better suburbs.
