Designing the Spaces for Learning

Interintellects Mind Apivessa and Katrina Dela Cruz continue to investigate the future of learning by exploring the spaces where we learn.
Classrooms, lecture halls, conference venues — each of these are traditional spaces for learning which which optimize for a “sage on the stage” model which leaves little room to foster creative, peer-to-peer collaboration. As educators such as Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia have emphasized in their work on preparing effective learning environments, where we learn is just as influential as what we learn or with whom we learn.
The lack of physical spaces created for intentional, public discourse also creates limitations around the culture of learning. While the pandemic had propelled the use of virtual spaces through video conferencing for peer-to-peer learning, access to local spaces has yet to be translated at scale in a tangible environment that is not barred by university admission.
In this salon, we’ll co-design our visions of learning spaces which facilitate deep thinking and cultivate creativity and collaboration. Please prepare to share an image and a short description of a learning space that inspires you. Join us!
