Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
Join writer and editorial director Herbert Lui, author of the new book Creative Doing with startup veteran Jason Shen for a conversation about developing your craft, getting past creative blocks, and growing your audience while staying true to your unique voice.
In partnership with Holloway.
“Creativity doesn’t just take place inside our brains; it’s a full body experience. And as much value as we place on the finished product as evidence of our creativity, we need to value creative doing.” – Herbert Lui
Whether it’s writing code, pushing pixels, running campaigns, or shooting video, most of us have to use creativity to solve problems and develop new material on a regular basis. As a writer, editorial director, and owner of editorial studio Wonder Shuttle, Herbert Lui has seen both the intense struggle and incredible joy that come with pursuing your creative potential.
In spring of 2022, he published Creative Doing: 75 practical exercises to unblock your creative potential in your work, hobbies, or next career with Holloway. It’s a compendium jam-packed with fascinating stories from creatives across a range of disciplines, from DJs to visual arts, authors and entrepreneurs, Kanye to Da Vinci. Each exercise is short and deceptively simple: Set a Time Limit, Find New References, Create Your Own Market, and have an enigmatic quality reminiscent of Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies.
As a 3x startup founder and executive coach to entrepreneurial leaders, Jason Shen is no stranger to the creative process. Over the last few months, he has been exploring each one of Lui’s exercises on Twitter with the hashtag #CreativeDoing, giving him a deep appreciation for Lui’s book.
We will begin the conversation talking about Lui’s experience as a writer and editor, and explore some of our favorite prompts from Creative Doing, and discuss common struggles that people face with tapping into their creativity. How does one overcome a creative block? What are the dangers of chasing trends? How do you keep making in the face of constant rejection? And is quality really more important than quantity?
