James Kirchick, author of Secret City, and Leon Wieseltier, editor of Liberties, will reflect on the evolution of the meaning of gay identity as it is discussed in Kirchick's essay "From Queer to Gay to Queer" which appeared in Liberties V3Iss4.

James has gained recognition for his vocal contributions in American gay politics and his advocacy for international gay rights. His efforts were acknowledged when he was honored with the Journalist of the Year Award by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.

Kirchick’s critical reflections on queerness and its career in American culture and politics has occasioned a lot of controversy. What is the actual meaning of queerness in American life? What does it have to do with actual gayness? Does progress require conformity? Who defines whom? What can other minority groups learn from the recent redefinitions of gay identity about the search for equality and acceptance?
