Christina Waggaman is a former biostatistician and hospital infection preventionist who made a career change to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), traditional Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa), and yoga therapy. She is passionate about creating opportunities for generative dialogue between proponents, critics and patients of both modern western biomedicine and traditional health therapies.
In this salon we will explore the promise and the challenge of integrating “alternative” healing modalities (including both traditional therapies as well as newer trends in wellness) within western biomedical systems. We will discuss how and where this is already happening along with roadblocks to integration: including paradigm incompatibilities between traditional medicines and modern science, regulation and credentialing of alternative health practices and practitioners, and limits of current research methodology in measuring holistic health outcomes. This salon will be a facilitated discussion drawing on the collective wisdom of the group rather than a lecture, so participants are encouraged to contribute based on their own personal or professional experiences.
