SF IRL Discussion Salon — What is Truth?

Do you enjoy making friends and connecting through discussing ideas and seeing how people think? This salon format is designed for you! We’ll be collaboratively exploring the question, “what is truth?”

I’m Phil, the founder of House 42, and we’ve been running this format of salon every Sunday in Mexico City for the past year.

This event is a format we’ve been running every week in Mexico City for the last year. We recently had a member start hosting these in Lisbon, and are exploring starting some in San Francisco. For this first event, we’re looking to invite locals who are curious about joining a recurring space for discussing philosophy, art, technology, and other ideas you’re interested in as a way to form community and make friends IRL.

To give you a sense, here are some possible discussion questions:

• What is truth? What differentiates it from belief or opinion?
• How do personal experiences shape our perception of truth?
• Share a “practical truth” you live by. How does it guide your decisions and actions?
• How are evolved biases and predispositions that helped us survive in the past making alignment around a shared truth complex and difficult in our modern “post-truth” era? What biases do you think you are most susceptible to that might influence your perception of what is true?”

One important thing to note is that the goal for this event is not to determine the “correct” or best answer to the discussion topic. Rather, it’s to learn about how others relate to the idea of truth, to share how we think and further our own understanding, and hopefully to vibe with some people enough to make a new friend.

We’ll share a an optional pre-read before the event, but to give you a sense, here’s the pre-read document for a previous salon, “Art as Therapy.”
