Join Interintellect founder Anna Gát as she returns to the topic of last year’s popular miniseries, A History of Love. In this second episode, we will talk about the poems and wars of antiquity, what it meant to move into big cities and build international empires, how big, hierarchical societies impacted loving and love-making, and how it all changed when the first monotheisms arose.
Welcome to the 2022 edition of our A History of Love series! In this episode, let’s take a trip back to the ancient world of Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, and Judea…
As at the dawn of what we like to call “civilisation” human settlements and societies started becoming more complex, many things people until then saw as simple and obvious were becoming more complicated, too. Matters of hundreds of thousands of years of tribal loyalty gave way to rules of nationality, marriage, and class as the most important signals of personal identity. With daily life now more literate and more layered what a romantic couple is and how it should behave was transforming: whether you descended from wealthy patricians or merchants, or had the lowest status in the system, how you could and would love was determined by a new set of factors.
At this salon, we will explore the many ways in which life and love in antiquity were new, how the role of love changed throughout the period, how it all coalesced in the famous texts of literature at the time, and what rules and preferences are still around.
We hope you can join this interesting discussion!
