Women’s fiction, especially novels in the ‘chick lit’ genre, are often seen as light, easy and just for fun. Works targeted towards women are often read or watched quickly and put aside with a smile, and only later do we appreciate the craft behind stories with an unabashedly feminine appeal.

In this salon, we will delve into our favourite works of women’s fiction across various mediums (books, movies, comics, animanga) and discuss why they are more than mere vehicles for escapism. We will also talk about the construction of romance storylines, the presence of the female gaze and how male creators influence the presentation of women’s fiction.
