Understanding Addiction Part Three: Unlearning Addiction
April 18, 2022 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
Part Three of the Understanding Addiction series hosted by psychologist and neuroscientist Marc Lewis, and drug, policy, and intervention researcher and activist Shaun Shelly.
In the third salon, in a series of four, Marc Lewis will discuss Internal Family Systems (IFS) to overcome dependent drug use, and Shaun Shelly will focus on the usefulness of Motivational Interviewing.
IFS is known (along with ACT and several other therapeutic techniques) as particularly well-poised to help psychotherapy clients recover from addiction and from the trauma that often precedes substance use. Seeing the mind as composed of quasi-independent parts helps us understand how we can passionately pursue goals that are completely conflictual. Regarding Motivational Interviewing, there are more than 150 systematic and meta-analyses across multiple and diverse mental health and behaviour change areas. But why, in particular, does this seemingly simplistic way of having a conversation encourage people to change and resolve their addictions? What does this tell us about the nature of addiction?
