Financial educator Kyla Scanlon and Cabin founder Jon Hillis join hosts Alaka Halder and Wes Chow for this Web3 and Society kick-off on web3’s potential to redefine the way in which we live and govern in groups. With this series, we hope to make web3 accessible to all and create a forum for discussing its applications, potential, and challenges.

The advancement of technology enables a deeper blend of online and in real-life living arrangements, which opens up questions on how physical and virtual communities complement each other. Increasingly, communities are using Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) to decide how to live and use resources — all without traditional protocols and intermediaries.

Cabin is one such experiment for building a network city for online creators. Its community is developing shared culture, economy, and governance across a global network of physical locations. The first cabins were established near Austin, TX using a DAO framework. Today, Cabin is offering support to individuals who want to start their own neighborhoods in a similar ethos.

More generally, DAOs can be used for philanthropy, investing, and borrowing. For example, a group of people can form investment DAOs to support artists, scientists, and online creators. These co-owners can choose which projects to fund and for how long. DAOs can thus ignite diversity and creativity in fields that rely heavily on centralized distribution platforms (e.g. online creators on Youtube) or funding (e.g. the biosciences).

During this salon, we will discuss:

  • How DAOs and smart contracts work, plus their applications and challenges
  • The experience of using DAOs for governing hybrid, physical, or fully online communities
  • What to consider when picking sites for experimental, decentralized cities and communities
  • The rules of engagement between a decentralized city and its physical host cities, and how this might evolve over time
