What are the characteristics of different social movements? In his debut Interintellect Salon, Robert Nemeth will lead a conversation to examine the different categories of these movements to allow us to better understand the world today. This conversation is the beginning of a 14-part series on 20th century social movements.
Britannica defines social movement as “a loosely organized but sustained campaign in support of a social goal, typically either the implementation or the prevention of a change in society’s structure or values.” However, social movements are much more than that: they are almost always based on a certain ideology, and fight for an imagined “greater good,” either for a specific group of people, or for the entire humankind.
In this salon, we will talk about the different types of social movements, take a look at their history, and how history defines today’s movements.
