Philosophical Breakfast Club

Join Arkadiusz Synowczyk for a free, members-only, weekly series of spirited philosophical discussions over coffee!

Back in the 19th century, four Cambridge students, bound by their shared love of science, began meeting on Sunday mornings. Their gatherings were intellectual salons aimed at discussing the state of science, plotting a new scientific revolution, and enjoying good food and drink. Their contributions are difficult to underestimate, William Whewell coined terms like “scientist,” “anode,” “cathode,” and “ion,” and led international research on tides. Richard Jones shaped the science of economics, for instance, by defending the inductive method in it. Charles Babbage invented the first modern computer., and John Herschel mapped the skies of the Southern Hemisphere, contributed to the development of photography, and, along with Whewell, heavily influenced the methodology of Charles Darwin. Their fascinating story is detailed in the excellent book by philosopher and historian Laura J. Snyder.
