Writing Support Group with Trisha Reddy

One of Trisha‘s most trusted tools in developing as a writer is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. Join her 12-week Writing Support Group to unblock your creativity and unlock your full potential as a writer!

Writing is a keystone habit—a positive feedback loop that can transform your life. While there’s a strong argument for everyone to write more, writing can be a challenging and solitary endeavor. However, it becomes significantly easier when undertaken with a group.

Our Writing Support Group is a 12-week mission designed to nurture heightened creativity and establish a consistent writing practice. The primary obstacle to writing is the “cold start” problem. The initial friction is so intense that few manage to cross the threshold into making writing a routine. The Writing Support Group aims to be the support system that helps overcome this cold start issue, bridging the gap between the amount of writing your ideal self does and the amount you actually do.

We are committing to Julia Cameron’s recommendations in “The Artist’s Way”: three pages of Morning Pages* journaling every day and a two-hour Artist Date** every week. We’ll convene weekly for a 15-minute discussion about our experiences, challenges, and some prompts from the book, followed by a 45-minute focused writing session. After an hour, we’ll split into smaller breakout rooms for optional feedback exchanges.

*Morning Pages are a journaling technique meant to be done as soon as you wake up. They serve as a potent tool to unlock creativity, combat self-doubt, and delve into deeper layers of one’s thoughts and emotions.

**The Artist Date is a dedicated time when you partake in an activity that ignites joy, curiosity, and allows for exploration. The core principles of an Artist Date are:

  • It should be a solo experience. Consistent time is reserved weekly for you to connect with your creativity, undistracted and uninfluenced by others.
  • It’s a chance to explore and discover—be it visiting a museum, taking a nature walk, or experimenting with a new art form. Embrace curiosity and a sense of childlike wonder. In “The Artist’s Way,” Julia Cameron posits that this exercise holds transformative power, unblocking creativity and rejuvenating one’s spirit. Engaging in this as a group and sharing our adventures from the previous week promises to be a delightful experience!

130.08.2023Recovering a Sense of Safety

Almost everyone with a creative inclination struggles with a deep seated fear of expressing their creativity. We’re terrified of making bad art and being ridiculed for it. But we can either choose to be artists and brave the world to put our most vulnerable selves out there or live the rest of our lives as shadow artists suppressing our creative urges. Neither path is easy but the outcomes are vastly different. This salon we’ll explore prompts that uncover our negative beliefs and build an inner ally that stands up for us when we’re being too critical of ourselves.
206.09.2023Recovering a Sense of Identity

Buying into self doubt is the primary blocker of creativity. Julia Cameron suggests that just as a recovering alcoholic must avoid the first drink, the recovering artist must avoid taking the ‘first think’ – which is usually self doubt. “I don’t think this is any good” or “who would read this?” and the likes. This week we will explore prompts that will guide you through self doubt onto the other side!
313.09.2023Recovering a Sense of Power

“Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace and power in it.” The universe is prodigal in its support. Believing that and taking action towards our creative goals will make doors open for us that we never knew existed in the first place.
This week we will explore prompts that will help us build self-nurturing habits and create a bias for action.
421.09.2023Recovering a Sense of Integrity

The act of writing three pages everyday apart from being a mental dump will lead to you uncover your ‘self’. It’s impossible to lie to yourself consistently and so the pages show you what you really think about yourself, your art and the world. “As we clarify our perceptions, we lose our misconceptions. As we eliminate ambiguity, we lose illusion as well. We arrive at clarity, and clarity creates change.” This week we’ll explore some time travel prompts that will push you to do some productive introspection and integration of new self awareness.
528.09.2023Recovering a Sense of Possibility

A large part of a creative block is the scarcity mindset. This week we’ll explore how you curtail your own possibilities by placing limits on what’s possible for you.

Writing Support Group: Recovering a Sense of Abundance

This week we’ll explore a major creative block – a scarcity mindset. We’ll dig into our current beliefs about god, money and creative abundance. It’s an important milestone in the series because we’re halfway through the program so we’ll spend some time reflecting on the changes we notice in ourselves and our creative process.
709.11.2023Writing Support Group: Recovering a Sense of Connection

This week we’ll explore the “Recovering a Sense of Connection” chapter of ‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron. In the process of doing so, we’ll discuss how to overcome perfectionism, the difference between “thinking ideas up” and “getting ideas down,” and connect more deeply with our creative processes.
