Her balanced treatment of virtue, wealth and status has similarities with the of Adam Smith, who Jane probably read. Smith's broad concept of the economic approach is echoed in large strains of modern economics, from Gary Becker's work to behavioural economics, and beyond. Economics is once again a science of much of what interested Jane - including not only wealth, but love and marriage, virtue, and social status.
