In this salon, debut host, Zohar Atkins, will lead a discussion about Heidegger’s Being and Time with particular attention to the question of how and whether philosophy can help us live meaningful lives.
Heidegger’s Being and Time (1927) is one of the most important, influential, difficult, and controversial works of all time, yet the questions it raises are fundamentally about what it means to live authentically in the modern world. The work has relevance to spiritual seekers, artists, and academics. Although Heidegger pitches himself as an analyst, I find his work to be a kind of self-help and a wake-up call. In this salon, we will explore the relationship between philosophy as a form of dispassionate analysis and philosophy as a summons to live more consciously.
We will discuss:
- the nature of time and history
- the burdens and blessings of tradition
- the fate of religion and spirituality in a secular age
- the between individuality and society
- authentic relationships
- why phenomenology matters
