Entire families and companies begin with random encounters at festivals. From counterculture music events like Woodstock that defined an entire decade, to modern gatherings like Burning Man that influenced the aesthetic of both modern cities and subcultures, festivals offer an alternative to the status quo while kicking off a new set of values and ideas that spread to the mainstream.

Today, events like Hereticon are leading the charge for innovation in the tech world, while post-rationalist weirdos from Twitter are getting together for Vibecamp and bringing the very online to the very offline. From SXSW in Austin to Art Basel in Miami to Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Germany, festivals have a common element of a shared legacy that can only be understood by their organizers and participants.
