Interintellect founder Anna Gát continues her series A History of Love with an episode focusing on the Long Nineteenth Century, from the French Revolution to the sinking of the Titanic.
The only recent century more turbulent than the 20th must have been the one before it, the infamous nineteenth century, with its prudes and its colonists, its industrialism and its greed, its starlets, its exploitations, its railroads, its syphilis, its poverty. And its odds-defying heights of beauty in literature, painting, and music.
In this exciting salon, we will talk about the advent of the secular society in the 19th c. West, the move into cities, the strengthening of national institutions, the blooming of universities. We will also talk about the inequalities present in these societies and how they reflected in people’s private lives, hopes, and expectations — the amassing of wealth, the broadening of the world through transport, the lengthening of life through medicine, and a renewed passionate interest, fuelled by the spreading of literacy, to explore the natural world and, eventually, the man descended from ape within it.
