The Federal Reserve has become one of the most powerful entities in the world since their creation in the early 1900s. Founded on the basis of normalizing market volatility after a series of bank runs, the Fed now sets the tone of the global markets.

The Fed is frequently misunderstood. They are blamed for the outsized market moves over the past few years (which they do bear some responsibility for) but we often misinterpret what the Fed does – it’s really about the power of narrative. It’s nudging the economy towards a goal – and their toolkit is far wider than a lot of people think. 

The purpose of this salon is to 1) present the history of the Federal Reserve and their current role in the market environment, 2) discuss the intangible aspects of their tools, and 3) engage in a moderated discussion as to the broader impact that they have.
