Can You Be Brave?

Despite all the micro- and macro-decisions we make throughout our lives, our big-picture attitudes towards them fall into two categories: being brave or being afraid.

Fear and courage rule our senses, and for good reason. There’s nothing inherently negative about fear, which is only there to protect us. Fear and courage even go hand in hand. As Nelson Mandela, said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” Fear keeps us safe and makes sure we survive. But how do we solve for more courage in ourselves, our immediate communities, and the way we all move through the world?

Visakan Veerasamy tweets “you cannot think yourself out of a courage deficit.” So what can we do about that courage deficit? How can we build it up? How can we create an environment that incentivizes courage? How do we abandon a frame of lack to embrace a frame of abundance? What must we feel, create and talk about to make that the ideal and primary mode of being?
