A Sentimental Education: Navigating Chosen Families, Mentors, and Lovers
Saturday November 9 at 10:00 pm EST
Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
Join philosopher Agnes Callard, Interintellect founder Anna Gát, and Irina Dumitrescu, writer and professor of English medieval studies, and explore the dynamics of intellectual and emotional connections outside traditional family structures, including lovers, mentors, and chosen families.
The concept of Eros—defined by Plato as a powerful and often destructive force—has evolved. While historically many viewed Eros as a source of self-destructive passion, modern society often overlooks these dangers, focusing instead on the romantic ideals of pathos and commitment that we’re all supposed to need more of. But does this new “sanitized” Eros go undetected in other areas of our lives complicating acts of education, competition, and association? Has Eros become an intellectual monster? Does the intellect attract and become attracted; is it always erotic? What is one to expect when joining communities, when accepting masters and apprentices? Can relationships of belonging and self-improvement ever live up to their ideal forms?
Join us and discuss!
