ii Salon Code of Conduct

What to Expect

An Interintellect Salon is an online or offline discussion, organised by and hosted by a “fellow Interintellect” about a specific topic. Our events are usually “evening-length” and entail balanced participation from all attendees.

More about our events’ ethos: The Five Rules of Gathering.

Salons are held in the spirit of multidisciplinarity, openness, opinion plurality, curiosity, and patience. Their goal is to engage and entertain – both to allow those present to dig deeper into the topic of the night, and to reveal new questions that might in the future merit their own Salons to discuss. At Salons, participants are given undivided attention without any one of them taking up more time than the others.

Wherever possible, Salons should be held in the evening: it is a type of intellectual entertainment after which one is rushing off to no other task; it is the last thing one might do on that day, which lends it an aura or relaxation and decadence.

Currently, all our Salons are online — but before the lockdowns we hosted them IRL — in Mountain View and Atlanta, London and Menlo Park, Berlin and Mumbai, Oxford and Berlin… As the lockdowns are easing, we will again aim to do events offline, although perhaps not exclusively.

All ii Salons and special events by early March 2021

Online Salons are hosted on Zoom, with a preference for everyone joining with video, at least for the duration of their talking. Your video link will be emailed to you ca. 45 minutes prior to the event, when bookings ended.

House Rules

Salons are live events – the uniqueness and unpredictability of each occasion is what lends them their magic.

However, because our format is live and because each combination of participants is unique and unexpected, some common sense rules apply as to how to cultivate a behaviour that makes the experience joyful for all these many different participants — coming together from the many continents, time zones, cultures, opinions, and professions of mankind.

Being On Time

Please arrive on time and if you need to take a break or leave earlier, give your Host a heads up via direct chat message.

Participation

Interintellect Salons are participatory with no option for attendees to join in just to watch. Your Host will be making efforts so that all those present get equal time and space to speak, elaborate, and ask questions.

Please be patient until your turn, raise your hand or indicate via chat if you’d like to speak, and avoid interrupting others unless you feel the moment of levity makes that welcome.

Mic and Video

Please have your mic muted whenever you’re not speaking. Please have your video turned on at all times, but at least when you are speaking. If you can’t for some reason have your video on, let your Host know. It is up to your Host’s discretion whether they will accept no-video participation at their Salon.

By default, most events are not recorded, with the exception of SuperSalons. For other salons, hosts must indicate in the event description that the meeting will be recorded, and should notify attendees at the beginning of the salon as well.

Attendees wondering if an event was recorded should check the event description. For members-only events, the recording will only be available to ii members. For SuperSalons, these may go on our YouTube channel.

Screenshots

Your Salon Host may take a screenshot of the conversation or photo of the IRL event and share it on our owned channels so that participants can find each other more easily. If you would not like to appear in these, please notify your Host.

Goodwill

Please use common sense both when talking and when writing into the chat stream about what topics or tones could make the experience unpleasant for your fellow participants.

Age Restriction

Occasionally, an ii Salon may carry a +18 age restriction – this happens when the topic of the evening is potentially distressing, or if it involves in-depth discussions of violence and sexuality.

Grounds for Removal from a Salon

Illegal activity

Engaging in unlawful activity or promoting illegal acts will lead to your removal from the video call.

Intellectual property infringement

While we share a lot of links, please refrain from uploading entire books or albums, unless it is clearly authorised by the owner.

Breach of privacy

Each Interintellect Salon participant has full power over how much personal information they wish to share. Any sharing of personal information about a fellow member without their permission will lead to your removal from the video call.

Hate speech

Common sense rules apply to protecting all Salon participants from attacks based on race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnicity, political group, sexual orientation, or disability.  Any such act will lead to your removal from the video call.

Harassment, bullying

Abusive language or repeated unwanted contact will lead to your removal from the video call.

Nudity

In order to maintain the intellectual standards of our community, and cultivate a respectful atmosphere that is safe and comfortable for every member, sexually explicit material will be removed. Repeated attempts will lead to your removal from the video call.

By joining our events, you have agreed to the conditions outlined above.

Thank you!

Enjoy your Salon!
