Physical health, strength and wellbeing for intellectuals: in his monthly Interintellect Salon, Ben Fleming addresses what’s beyond sitting and thinking?
Low fat. Low carb. Vegan. Keto. Paleo. Intermittent fasting. Juice cleanse. Vegetarian. Pescatarian. Fruitarian. Carnivore.
The list goes on (and on.. and on..). But which diet is the most healthy?
What does “healthy” even mean in the context of diet and nutrition?
Food is not just calories and nutrients. Emotions, preferences, social norms, traditions, and memories interplay with our attitudes and behaviours around what we eat. With this in mind, how do we define a healthy diet? And what are the rituals, skills, and experiences that shape our ideas about what we should to and shouldn’t be eating? Do we have time to cook? Who do we eat with? What do we do when we are hungry? What are our favourite foods?
I am a personal trainer and I help people to make informed decisions about their diet. With effective frameworks for applying a deeper technical knowledge of nutrition, my clients are able to make informed decisions about the food they eat and how it affects their body.
However, we have all been eating since infancy. Therefore every human being comes with years of experience influencing the way they eat and so it is never as simple as just telling someone what to eat.
In this salon we will share our experience of dieting and healthy eating, learn some technical info on nutrition and teach each other healthy eating guidance that we have found to be effective in our own lives.
And maybe come to a conclusion about what defines a healthy diet.
This salon is part of a track of salons on the topic of good physical health, happening on the first Monday of each month . The title of this track is “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” which means “A Healthy Mind in A Healthy Body”. My desire is to think deeply and collaboratively about physical health, gathering the collective wisdom of our experience, but also to apply that thinking to our physical bodies, turning theory into practice.
