A Theory of Everyone Reading Group: Part 2

Monday April 1 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected

Explore cultural and societal evolution at ‘A Theory of Everyone‘ reading book club hosted by Markus Leavitt. Connect, share insights, and engage with diverse perspectives – all are welcome!

Are we at a stagnation point in cultural and societal evolution? What barriers are in the way for a greater future? The industrial revolution kicked off several centuries of cheap energy that allowed tools of innovation and cooperation to expand as well. But the feedback loop of physical energy and human potential has been weakening. We have more people, more resources, more energy, more technology, than at any point in human history, yet there still feels like there is something in the way for us to put all this amazing potential to use.

Join host Markus Leavitt for a discord based reading club of ‘A Theory of Everyone‘ by Michael Muthukrishna. We will meet periodically for conversation on the themes of the book. Ongoing discussion between salons will happen in the 📚reading-groups channel on discord where we can share quotes, thoughts, relevant articles, and content as we read. Get the advantage of more intentional comprehension and engage with others’ unique perspectives.

If you can’t make the meetings but want to read the book you can still join! This reading group is designed as a hybrid approach to accommodate anyone interested.

A Theory of Everyone (Publishers Blurb):

A blueprint for a better future that offers a unified theory of human behavior, culture, and society.

Playing on the phrase ‘a theory of everything’ from physics, Michael Muthukrishna’s ambitious, original, and deeply hopeful book A Theory of Everyone draws on the most recent research from across the sciences, humanities, and the emerging field of cultural evolution to paint a panoramic picture of who we are and what exactly makes human beings different from all other forms of life on the planet.

Muthukrishna argues that it is our unique ability to create culture, a shared body of knowledge, skills, and experience passed on from generation to generation, that has enabled our current dominance. But it is only by understanding and applying the laws of life—the need for energy, innovation, cooperation, and evolution—that we can solve the practical and existential challenges we face as a species. A Theory of Everyone attempts to provide solutions for the most pressing problems of our collective future, such as polarization, inequality, the ‘great stagnation’ in productivity, and the energy crisis.

Casting a bold and wide net, Muthukrishna’s book is a must-read for anyone interested in a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.
