Join Alex Criddle for the sixth salon in the Breakthroughs series and explore the evolution and development of human valuation and moral systems.
After exploring the role political structures play in human progress, we’ll look at the moral dimension of human progress. Do political systems facilitate breakthroughs in morality? We’ll trace the moral trajectories of the human species looking at the value of a human life in ancient times up through the present day.
Is a human life worth more today than 2000 years ago? Do we have a better grasp on what is moral and good than before? Has morality progressed from the time of Plato, Aristotle, or Marcus Aurelius? What have more recent moral systems such as utilitarianism, deontology, and consequentialism added to ethical debates?
