Making Room for the Weird: Carlos Eire on the Paranormal in a Secular Age
Monday March 25 at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm EDT
Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
Join Yale History professor Carlos Eire and theologian-novelist Tara Isabella Burton for a conversation on Eire’s new book They Flew: a history of the paranormal and inexplicable in the early modern world, and what it can tell us about our current age of “weirdness” against a backdrop of seeming secularism.
The early modern era was a time when science and skepticism reigned supreme. Or was it? In his new book They Flew: A History of the Impossible, Yale professor Carlos Eire argues that early modern Europe was also a time of popular fascination with the inexplicable: from levitation to witchcraft. What can we learn about the rise of interest in the weird and the paranormal in “secular” ages – from the Enlightenment to the present day?
