Democracy Without Truth?

Details
What is the relation between democracy and truth? A standard view, associated with Kant and Rawls, is democracy requires a shared search for truth - without truth, democracy crumbles and totalitarianism rises. In contrast, philosopher Richard Rorty argued for democracy without truth. For Rorty truth is a metaphysical fantasy which leads to fanaticism on the right and left. Instead of truth, he suggested irony and solidarity as the bedrock of democracy. In this salon we will discuss whether in our age of social media and fake news, Rorty's view can offer a new way forward for democracy.
