Close Poetry Reading of “Aubade” by Philip Larkin

In this salon we start not with a set theme or topic, but with an activity– reading and reflecting on a single poem, finding out where it takes us. We will start with Philip Larkin’s “Aubade”. Together we can bring other poems to the table as our discussion unfolds, but first we’ll launch with Larkin’s poem and follow its many tributaries of meaning and sound. With Larkin at the helm, we’re sure to brave discussions of our own mortality, helplessness, and the meaning we might derive from our incalculable vulnerability. But we are also sure to uncover topics, related verses, and personal meanings that we can’t foretell before salon participants engage with the poem, in the moment. Join us for this extended moment of poetry, a part of an ongoing poetry reading gathering through the Interintellect.
