For the fourth Liberties x Interintellect salon, join Katherine C. Epstein and Celeste Marcus for a discussion of Katherine’s recent Liberties essay ‘Scholarship and the Future of Society.” For the first 30-45 mins of the salon Katherine and Celeste will discuss the essay, and then attendees are invited to ask questions and share their thoughts.
Katherine Epstein’s essay “Scholarship and the Future of Society” considers how the loss of the humanities has contributed to the current dysfunction of American politics and to the erosion of America’s position in the world, and also how the humanities themselves have contributed to those ills. Epstein explains the unique power and capacity of the historical discipline, and how that specialty can heal us.
Kate Epstein is a professor of history at Rutgers University. She is currently working on her second book, which examines government secrecy, defense contracting, intellectual property, and the political economy of power projection. Her work has appeared in various academic journals and edited collections, as well as in the Wall Street Journal and American Interest.
