Reading Beowulf: Beowulf and the Dragon + Beowulf and Tolkien

April 28, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Join host Colin Gorrie as we read the great Old English epic poem Beowulf together, as part of the Reading Beowulf series.

In this session, we’ll end our journey with Beowulf in discussing his final battle with the dragon. We’ll also examine the enormous influence Beowulf had on Tolkien – who was probably the world’s foremost Beowulf scholar in his day.

In preparation for our meeting, read the first major section of the poem, up to the part where Beowulf’s battle with Grendel has ended. This will be in a different spot in each translation, but if you’re using one of the two recommended public domain versions, read up to:

– the end of chapter 43 (The Burning of Beowulf) in the Hall verse translation
– the end of chapter 43 (p151) in the Clark Hall prose translation
