Reading Beowulf: Grendel’s Mother + Translating Beowulf

March 31, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected

Join host Colin Gorrie as we read the great Old English epic poem Beowulf together, as part of the Reading Beowulf series.

In this session, we’ll talk about Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother. We’ll also examine the different choices translators have made in translating Beowulf: verse or prose? archaic or modern? strange or familiar?

In preparation for our meeting, read the second major section of the poem, up to the part where Beowulf is about to leave the court of Hrothgar. This will be in a different spot in each translation, but if you’re using one of the two recommended public domain versions, read up to:

– the end of chapter 27 (“Sorrow at Parting”) in the Hall verse translation
– the end of chapter 27 (p95) in the Clark Hall prose translation.
