Reading Beowulf: The Rise of Beowulf + The Heroic Ethos

April 14, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

$25.00

Join host Colin Gorrie as we read the great Old English epic poem Beowulf together, as part of the Reading Beowulf series.

This session will cover the rise of Beowulf to power as a king in his own right. We’ll also discuss the heroic age that Beowulf purports to describe. What was it like? And how did it change with the coming of Christianity?

Reading

In preparation for our meeting, read the third major section of the poem, up to the part where Beowulf is about to set off to do battle with the dragon. This will be in a different spot in each translation, but if you’re using one of the two recommended public domain versions, read up to:

– the end of chapter 34 (Beowulf Seeks the Dragon. – Beowulf’s Reminiscences) in the Hall verse translation
– the end of chapter 34 (p121) in the Clark Hall prose translation.
