Things To Try Before Quitting Your Job

Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
At her debut Interintellect salon/workshop, Pamela J. Hobart (philosopher a.k.a. “The Life Coach for Smart People”) will help attendees figure out when they can – and should! – try something before quitting a mediocre job, vs. when they should proceed directly to the exit.Â
Finding yourself in a job that’s too bad to tolerate as-is, but too good to leave immediately, is perhaps the mother of all “first world problems.” The practical aspects of work (money, skills) quickly become all jumbled up with more existential stuff (contributing to the world, establishing identity). It can be slippery to get a handle on all of this.
Mediocre jobs can pay the bills and protect you from risk for a while, but they’ll also sap your energy and fry your nerves. Some mediocre jobs provide the opportunity to improve our very characters, while others threaten to coarsen us instead.
How can we think about the tradeoffs built into mediocre jobs? What are your options other than “quit” or “stay”? Are there signs that a job is salvageable, at least for a while? Which narratives are available to you, and why do they matter?
