Join host Joseline Yu for a discussion on Ovid’s Metamorphoses to unravel the threads of chaos, love and lust weaved throughout the narrative poem’s mythical tales, as part of the Western Canon Book Club series.
Ovid’s Metamorphoses stitches together various myths to create an all-encompassing story of the changes in history since the creation of the world. Pain is the common thread that runs through these myths featuring characters facing death, forbidden love and the cruelty of the gods.
Must change be accompanied with suffering and chaos? Is the allure of love and lust worth undergoing painful changes in mind and body?
We’ll tackle these questions and others during this salon. To delve deeper into the themes and artistry of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, we’ll also talk about excerpts from the following tales:
- Origin of the World
- Pyramus and Thisbe
- Procne and Philomela
- Byblis and Her Brother
- Orpheus and Eurydice
Selected passages from Stanley Lombardo’s translation will be shared for our discussion. Those who have yet to read or finish the text are welcome to join!
