WWTD – What Would Terry Pratchett Do? – A Discourse on the Philosophy of the Discworld

May 27, 2021 at 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm SAST

Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected

In this salon Bronwyn Williams and Daniel Thomason ask ‘What Would Terry Pratchett Do?’, exploring the wisdom and insights of this much loved author.

“The whole of life is just like watching a film. Only it’s as though you always get in ten minutes after the big picture has started, and no-one will tell you the plot, so you have to work it out all yourself from the clues.” ~ Terry Pratchett

From the Sam Vimes “Boots” theory of economics to Granny Weatherwax’s admonitions not to treat people like things, to his uniquely comforting and pragmatic approach to the inevitability of our mortality; Terry Pratchett had practical philosophy and every-day wisdom to share on almost any human issue you can think of.

Whether you are struggling with the idea artificial intelligence, the ethics of euthanasia or the finer nuances of geopolitical diplomacy, you are sure to find if not answers, at least solace somewhere in Sir Terry’s extensive body of work. And, when it comes to facing tough choices and difficult situations in our own lives, we can do worse than ask ourselves What Would Terry Pratchett Do?

In this salon, we will discuss the wit and wisdom of the Discworld (and Terry’s other works) with a view to exploring how Terry’s ideas about imaginary places and races can help us be better humans in the very real world we live in today.

We invite you to join us as we unpack the Almanac of Sir Terry.

PS: If there is enough interest in this salon, we will consider extending our Discworld Discourse into a standing monthly series.
