Generation X with Sean Patrick Hughes

In this new series, writer Sean Patrick Hughes explores the culture, events and history of Generation X.

Last year the oldest of Generation X turned 55. As the culture wars of Boomers and Millennials rage, Gen X has quietly wandered into the age of power.

While the esthetics of ‘70s and the fads of MTV dominate the surface of Gen X, more nuanced forces were at work. We were the generation that grew up “winning” the Cold War. We went on to fight in forever wars. We were the first generation raised on cable TV. We were the last generation to go to college without the internet. Our political identities grew out of the temperate waters of Reagan and Clinton. Our parents were hippies. They fought in Vietnam. Our mothers were protected by Title IV. Our ADHD was undiagnosed.

Every generation lives through change. The speed and scope of change is what defines it.
In this seven part series, we will look at the foundations of a generation. From culture and entertainment to the structures of education and the growth of technology. And of course, politics and war. So much war.
