Exploring Liminal Spaces

Join returning host Scott Davies in a typically wide-ranging and freeform discussion on the idea of liminal spaces, both physical and mental, and the effects these have on our personal lives and society at large. All are welcome and all perspectives are encouraged in this salon.

Liminal Spaces are conventionally thought of as physical spaces that are ‘between’ places – think hallways, carparks and so on. Often, they are depicted as built-up spaces where no one is around – think a shopping mall or office after-hours. But what if a liminal space can also be thought of as a feeling and a mood? In the same way there are transitory or hard-to-define physical spaces, there are also liminal spaces of feeling, of circumstance, of experience. Think of the transition between jobs, education to employment, between relationships and more. These spaces are often confusing, disorienting, and hard to describe. Yet, they are an unavoidable part of our life.

For a large part of the last two years, we have all in our own ways, thanks to a global pandemic, been living in a liminal space of sorts. Unsure when we will be able to see friends, family, work colleagues, or be able to inhabit many of the regular physical spaces we spent our days in again, we all in some way entered a liminal space, a time of uncertainty and disorientation.
