Henry Oliver is a literature blogger at The Common Reader. This salon will guide through some of the great English language poems and show you how to understand their nuances and niceties.

The first session is about lyric poetry, focusing on its structure.

We will do a close reading of ‘Fire and Ice‘ by Robert Frost, looking at questions like:

  • How does the meter work?
  • What is the poem about?
  • How is the poem structured?
  • What influenced Frost to write this poem?

We will also discuss:

  1. Glass by Anne Finch
  2. Daffodils by Herrick
  3. Wild Geese Mary Oliver

There are two other salons in this series:

  1. One on sonnets
  2. One on sympathy
