In this exciting SuperSalon, senior Opinion editor at The New York Times and writer Jyoti Thottam will join entrepreneur and Interintellect host Swathy Prithivi to discuss Sisters of Mokama.

In her first book, Thottam explores the journey of a group of Appalachian nuns who established a Nazareth Hospital in 1947 in the east Indian state of Bihar, one of the regions hardest hit by Partition—the period when the British finally left India, leaving it to be bloodily divided into independent nation states, today known as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Thottam has a personal connection to this story: Her mother traveled from her home state in India to this very hospital in Bihar to receive training as a nurse.

This book is a story about a community of women who were building an institution in India in the 1940s – ’60s that was founded by women, run by women, and had all the decisions made by women. Pain and loss were everywhere for the women of that time, but the collapse of the old orders provided the women of Nazareth Hospital with an opening—a chance to create for themselves lives that would never have been possible otherwise. The institution today is an institution run by Indian women.

What does it mean to be an outsider intent on forging one’s role in another society? How do outsiders become insiders and how do they navigate change in the community? What does it meant to build as a woman and circumvent the gender norms of the larger context you’re coming from?

Join Jyoti and Swathy to to unpack these ideas with other curious minds.
