Mercatus Center’s Tyler Cowen and Shruti Rajagopalan join us to discuss whether our conventional ideas about talent (that it’s evenly distributed, the importance of grit, and so on) stand closer scrutiny, what is currently happening in emerging intellectual centres such as India and what we can learn from them, and what new frameworks those looking for talent–or to become one–need to adopt for the coming era.
What made Vienna, for a brief period in history, the intellectual Schelling point of the world? Are talented people condemned to forever compete with each other, or is proximity a cooperative superpower? Is talent nurtured, in the safety of classrooms and group chats, or hunted for in the wilderness using precise heuristics?
In their new book Talent, co-authors Tyler Cowen and Daniel Gross talked about the “art and science” of talent search. 24 “cohorts” in, Tyler’s Emergent Ventures grant initiative is testing its founder’s theories about intelligence, aptitude, and efficiency in the most practical way possible: by giving people the means and connections to deliver on their promise. Because what else is talent if not a promise and its subsequent delivery of value?
Now with Shruti Rajagopalan, herself an “EV” winner, leading Emergent Ventures India, and new branches of the grant launching in Africa and for the African diaspora, we’ll talk about the global realities of talent, how scenes of intellectual output develop as a side effect of empowered inquiry and environments offering repetition and routine, and what ever-elusive eminence, maybe of nature, maybe of nurture, really is.
So much alignment with Interintellect’s areas of interest, we’re very excited for this upcoming conversation! We hope you can join us.
