Much has been said about what ails media and journalism: misinformation, weak revenue models, lack of diversity and representation, censorship, and declining trust from the public. Could Web3-based initiatives like Mirror and Dirt change the status quo? What challenges – old and new – do they face?
We’re beginning to see a trend towards decentralizing media. Platforms such as Substack are allowing writers to go direct to readers, which encourages media ecosystem diversity and de-emphasizes the role of the traditional publisher. This opens up questions of accountability, quality, and financial sustainability. Optimists argue that Web3 can provide sustainable solutions for these issues. Tokens might be used to promote quality and promote meaningful engagement. Skeptics have noted that it’s not yet clear how Web3 is superior to subscription-based models. Web3 is a tool, not a panacea, and also comes with implementation challenges such as accessibility, scalability, and governance.
We expect a great conversation with our special guests, both of whom are veteran commentators on culture and technology:
Terry Nguyen is a senior writer at Dirt, a Web3-powered publication that raised a $1.2 million seed round in 2022). Her work has also appeared in Vox, the Washington Post, Vice, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone (among other publications).
Erik Hoel is an author and neuroscientist who has written extensively about culture, science, and journalism. His debut novel, The Revelations, was published in 2021.
