Jealousy: A Show & Tell
May 5, 2022 at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm CDT
Start time where you are: Your time zone couldn't be detected
Who says show and tell is just for kids? In Alma Cook’s monthly miniseries, we’ll discuss simple concepts in a collaborative way, using attendees’ own selections from arts and culture as our springboard. Don’t be afraid to bring your guitar, your dancing shoes, or your latest poem!
Alma Cook is a singer-songwriter, business owner, and Braver Angels cultural ambassador. With many hats come many interests, including faith, economics, art, and communal living—but above all, she loves to bring people together for food and fellowship.
This month’s topic: jealousy! How old were you when you first felt it? What’s really happening inside of us when we covet someone’s looks, lifestyle, lover, or mindset? Has jealousy ever sparked something good in you, motivating you to reach higher, work harder, achieve more?
The formula is simple: bring a song, book, poem, quote, movie clip, painting, or even an everyday object that represents the topic at hand. You’re welcome to bring/perform an original work or share something made by someone else. Alma will loosely make space for everyone to talk about why they selected their piece—but beyond that, there’s no agenda, and there’s certainly no one threatening to vote you off the island for doing it wrong.
“Anger, he smiles, towering
In shiny metallic purple armor.
Queen Jealousy, envy, waits behind him;
Her fiery green gown
Sneers at the grassy ground.”
—Jimi Hendrix
How to Prepare
Think about what jealousy means to you. Find a piece that captures what you believe jealousy is (or distinctly isn’t), and be ready to say a few words about it—unless you’d prefer to just listen, which is fine too! Original works and performances are encouraged, but not required. This is a great space to test out your new material in a low-pressure setting.
