Epistemology, the theory of knowledge, is often understood as a subject worthy of study, if at all, for the sake of itself. In this new salon series, Arkadiusz Synowczyk, a philosophy student specializing in epistemology, will show how this approach is fundamentally misguided. Epistemology, far from a purely theoretical subject, will be shown as providing crucial guidance in one’s daily life.
In the first episode of the series, we will lay the groundwork for the entire course by delving into the ontological premises upon which epistemology is built. From these foundations, we will explore the resulting fundamental principles that guide our thinking processes.
The topics discussed in the episode will include:
  • What are the most fundamental premises behind logical thinking?
  • What are the “three laws of thought”?
  • Are there more than “three laws of thought”?
  • What basic philosophy of mind can teach us about proper thinking?
It should be highlighted that the perspective on epistemology presented in this course will be one with which many, though not all, epistemologists would agree on. However, the series is intended to rely on ideas that are as uncontroversial as possible.

Recommended materials:

  1. A Discourse on Method, Part I, by René Descartes
  2. Metaphysics, Book IV, by Aristotle
  3. On Nature by Parmenides
