Meta has set out to reshape our collective vision for an embodied, virtual utopia, but at what cost? What type of future does Meta want? What type of future is it trying to get us to forget?

Brent Lucia, professor of communications at the University of Connecticut, will guide a conversation regarding the strategies Mark Zuckerberg engages in to forecast a techno-utopia, or what communication scholars now call: sociotechnical imaginaries.

We’ll discuss current communication scholarship and connect it to the various ways Meta attempts to position Facebook in society (as articulated in Zuckerberg’s Metaverse announcement). Essentially, we’ll locate the rhetorical choices in Meta’s messaging that make us believe in Facebook’s visions, while also noticing its reductive effect on our imaginations.
