Writing and Illustrating with AI: An Exploratory Workshop

There’s been quite a buzz recently around generative AI programs such as GPT and Stable Diffusion. In this workshop salon we will work as a group on a short piece of illustrated fiction using tools such as ChatGPT to produce the writing and Midjourney to generate illustrations to accompany it (Since this is a fast moving area, the exact tools used will be confirmed 24 hours before the salon).

The workshop will start with a short demo of the tools we will be using. Around 30-40 minutes will then be devoted to each of:

• Writing the text with AI
• Generating the illustrations with AI
• Editing the output as a group to produce a finished piece.

This workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in generative AI. No particular experience or knowledge is necessary, if you are able to communicate in written English you should be able to participate in this workshop. It is intended to be a relaxed and engaging session where there will be no pressure to produce a particular result, but hopefully participants will have fun and learn about the tools while producing a short piece of illustrated fiction.

Recommended Readings

There is no required preparation as everything will be explained at the beginning of the workshop, but the list of tools will be made available 24 hours before in case anyone wants to familiarize themselves with them in advance. Participants will not be expected to purchase any paid subscriptions to AI tools to participate. The host will have any paid subscriptions that are required and work using paid tools will be carried out on the host’s computer via screensharing.
