Jane Jacobs is essential reading for anyone interested in cities, urban planning, or community dynamics. Her groundbreaking book The Death and Life of Great American Cities challenged conventional planning practices in the 20th century, emphasizing the value of diverse, vibrant neighborhoods over sterile, large-scale developments. Jacobs celebrated the organic complexity of urban life, advocating for mixed-use spaces, walkability, and the role of everyday citizens in shaping their environments. Part I of The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs will be covered of three sessions:&nbsp;3/7- Introduction and Chaprter 23/21- Chapters 3 and 44/4-&nbsp;Chaprters 5 and 6

Reading Jane Jacobs: Part I

Building off a 2020 article in The Atlantic by David Brooks (https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/03/the-nuclear-family-was-a-mistake/605536/), this Salon aims to explore positive ideas and strategies to rebuild the extended family and/or build alternative structures to the nuclear family model in contemporary Western societies. Potential discussion points include:

•	How can we learn from other cultures that have retained traditional extended family structures?
•	How might the concept of "forged families" where individuals create supportive networks outside traditional family structures strengthen society where blood kinship-based family structures are not viable?
•	What changes to laws, institutions and social norms would help to promote a greater role for the extended family?
•	How can new ways of living and working help to rebuild extended family ties? Do advances in technology in the 21st Century help with this?
•	What can individuals, policymakers and institutions do to help advance these goals?


The article is paywalled but at the time of writing you can read one article for free per month. It also appeared in the March 2020 print issue of The Atlantic, so if your local Public Library holds back issues that may be another way to read it for free.

It will be helpful but not essential to read the article ahead of the Salon.

Sometimes we dread boredom and other times we praise it. “Kids aren’t properly bored these days,” people like to say about the abundance of entertainment options that prevent children’s creativity and curiosity to take off. But how far will we go to praise boredom? Is it generative as well in romantic relationships? Is it okay to be bored beside or bored of another person? What are our options, when we feel bored? We’ll be talking to philosopher Adam Miller about how boredom shapes the internal drama of modern life, and modern relationships. Adam is the author of The Gospel According to David Foster Wallace, where he wrests beauty from some of Wallace's most chilling insights about what it means to live an ordinary life. As Wallace writes in The Pale King, “Maybe dullness [boredom] is associated with psychic pain because something that’s dull or opaque fails to provide enough stimulation from some other, deeper type of pain that is always there.” So...must we accept a fate of boredom? Come join us for an engaging discussion on this terrifying topic. The conversation will be hosted by Diana Brown and her co-host on The Soloists podcast, Mallory Everton.

The Atlantic recently declared a “crisis of faith in romance”, observing that many have given up on dating and finding a partner. Men and women are growing apart in religion, politics, and lifestyle preferences, and apparently don't like each other much anymore. What some have called “the rise of single America” is not the future; it is already here. 

Cue the hand-wringing from the cultural right which links between marriage with well-being and insists people should settle down and just choose someone already. Cue the cheering from the cultural left which hand-waves away the concerns and disappointment singles often face and celebrates these changes as signs of societal progress. Neither side is sufficiently curious about what it is like making relationship decisions today.

Next, enter The Cold Feet Chronicles–our goofy name for a conversation series examining those intimate moments of decision-making around partnership and commitment in order to illuminate what’s actually happening in there. After all, it is in these isolated, interior choices– of yes, of no, of prolonged maybes, and of refusals to answer-–where this drama takes place. 

As culture, religion, and family play a diminishing role in guiding marriage and family formation, individuals are left alone with their murky hearts to make some of the most consequential decisions of their lives. And as Rachel Wiseman recently wrote about the choice of whether to have children, romantic decision-making is simply “too important to allow it to be a casualty of the culture war.”

Here, we want to make the heart less murky. Each session will host a conversation and Q&A with a scholar with insight on certain under-discussed anxieties that often lurk unnoticed in relationship decisions (among many other things.) We’ll explore how contemporary relationship norms set us up for ambivalence, boredom, embarrassment, envy, and irritation and think through their stakes. Ultimately, the goal is to gain clarity on what it is we are really choosing and courage to own up to our choices, whatever they may be.

Boredom & The Terror of Ordinary Life

“Kids aren’t properly bored these days,” people often say these days when lamenting the abundance of children’s entertainment options compared to prior generations. In this context, boredom is considered a generative place for children’s creativity and curiosity to take off. The absence of boredom signals something vital missing from a child’s development.

But how far will we go to praise boredom? Would we praise boredom in romantic relationships? 

In our second workshop of the Cold Feet Chronicles, we’ll be talking to philosopher Adam Miller about how boredom shapes the internal drama of modern relationships. Adam is the author of many books, including The Gospel According to David Foster Wallace,  where he works with Wallace’s writings to articulate spiritual guidance for modern living. “What’s so terrifying about an empty room or a silent car or a hard math problem?,” Adam asks. “Why does boredom seem painful? Shouldn’t it just be boring?” Wallace writes in Pale King, “Maybe dullness is associated with psychic pain because something that’s dull or opaque fails to provide enough stimulation from some other, deeper type of pain that is always there.” 

There’s no doubt that our dread of boredom impacts romantic decision-making. Put your hand up if you’ve never said those exact words, “He/she is great, they’re just boring,” to a friend, if you’ve never stirred up tension or conflict to avoid that unsettling kind of ease, or if you’ve never evaded entering an exclusive relationship because the terror of being alone and bored beside another person for a lifetime almost nauseates you…. We’ll wait. 

So must we accept a fate of boredom? If we refuse, what will that mean? What does boredom have to say about what it means to live an ordinary human life? When do our desires for novelty and stimulation turn from generative to merely distracting from our ordinariness?  How do we discern between stagnation and boredom in a relationship? What are our options, when we feel bored beside another person?
